Causes of High Diastolic Blood Pressure Readings and What to Do About Them

You’re probably familiar with the blood pressure cuff your doctor uses but do you really understand what he is measuring?

Blood pressure is the force that the heart places on the walls of your blood vessels when it pumps and relaxes. When the heart pumps the pressure goes up and this is called systolic pressure. When the heart relaxes, the pressure goes down and this is know as diastolic pressure.

Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. If your diastolic is between 80 and 100 you are pre-hypertensive. If it is over 100 you have hypertension and will probably be placed on drugs.

If you have a high diastolic reading you probably have a high systolic reading as well. It really doesn’t matter though because high diastolic pressure carries the same life threatening conditions as systolic.

High diastolic blood pressure is more common in young adults, teens and even children.

It’s been suggested that birth weight may have a direct connection to this condition.

The three principal cause of high diastolic pressure are:

Obesity: Overweight people with a high Body Mass Index place additional pressure on the arterial system creating higher blood pressure. Excess fat and cholesterol can stiffen the arteries and clog them with plaque causing the heart to have to pump harder.
Diet: One of the biggest contributors to HBP and the principal cause of obesity, is an unhealthy diet rich in salt, saturated fats and trans-fatty acids. A diet with these characteristics can damage blood vessels at the cell level. This diet encourages oxidation which weakens cells, hardens arteries, and creates plaque.
Smoking: Putting nicotine in your body is not a good idea. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels increasing blood pressure and also causes the heart to beat faster.

So if you are an overweight smoker who thinks Burger King is gourmet food, you are probably in real danger.

The obvious solution is to set aside time to exercise. Thirty minutes of walking or cycling will have an immediate impact on your blood pressure.

Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and vasodilators. Antioxidants fight free radicals which cause oxidation. Vasodilators allow the blood vessels to dilate and handle the pressure more efficiently. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great sources for both these characteristics.

Just say no to tobacco.

The more our society tries to make life convenient the further we get from the natural fuels that our body requires. Unfortunately, convenience and automation have a cost. That cost is nearly 70 million Americans with high blood pressure. Now is the time to take responsibility for your health and make the changes you need to ensure a longer healthier life.

Your heart will thank you.

So now you know you have this opportunity, what do you do next. Where do you start? There is so much to know. It’s all out there on the internet. Google “cure high blood pressure” and you’ll get 13.2 million returns. Good luck with that.

Written by Chicagohealers.com practitionerTeresa Zeigler, L.Ac–

High blood pressure or hypertension also known as the silent killer is a major problem in America’s fast-paced, high stress world. Blood pressure is the force of the flowing blood against the walls of the arteries. It is measured in two numbers. The first number is systolic pressure which represents the pressure generated when the heart contracts and pumps the blood through the artery. The lower number is diastolic pressure, which represents the pressure in the vessels when the heart is at rest. If your systolic pressure is equal or greater than 140 mmhg, and/or your diastolic pressure is equal or greater than 90 mmhg on three separate occasions while seated, a definite diagnosis can be made.

Causes of High Blood Pressure – Although behavior patterns and stress play an important part, hypertension is most closely related to dietary factors. Other key elements are:

Excessive weight or obesity

Lifestyle factors such as coffee consumption, alcohol intake, excessive salt use, and lack of aerobic exercise.

Cigarette smoking is a contributing factor in hypertension. Smoking is also positively associated with increased sugar, alcohol and caffeine consumption. Nicotine stimulates the adrenaline secretion.

If you experience any of the following sign/symptoms you should see your physician to have your blood pressure monitored: headache, fatigue, confusion, nausea/vomiting, excessive perspiration, muscle tremors, chest pain, ear ringing/buzzing How Can You Prevent High Blood Pressure?

Everyone–regardless of race, age, sex, or heredity–can help lower their chance of developing high blood pressure. Here’s how:

1) Maintain a healthy weight, lose weight if you are overweight,
2) Be more physically active,
3) Consume lower salt and sodium foods, reduce consumption of red meat, eat more fruits and vegetables
4) If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. Quit smoking it increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

These rules are also recommended for treating high blood pressure, although medicine is often added as part of the treatment. It is far better to keep your blood pressure from getting high in the first place.

Low blood pressure or the hypotension is considered to be a sign of good health by some people, they hold this assumption because of the fact that high blood pressure possess a greater pressure on the heart and the circulatory system, and many people consider that the low blood pressure possess a lesser risk on the kidney disease, on the heart strokes, and other heart disease. But low blood pressure also possesses equal dangers, and it is also a sign of health in bad shape.

Low blood pressure also carries some risks. In low blood pressure, the brain, heart and the other diseases may not receive enough blood and this can cause some of the vital organs to fail, they may not function properly and they may even get permanently damaged. The lack of oxygen can also make the patients affected with low blood pressure to experience blackouts, especially in situations when you stand and sit very quickly after they have been lying down. Such types of blood pressure, wherein the patient experiences black outs is referred to as orthostatic hypotension. Sometimes low blood pressure can be a symptom for some of the life threatening diseases like dehydration, shock, diabetes, heart failure, heart attack and anaphylaxia (this is one of the life threatening disease caused because of allergies). It is not that low blood pressure can cause these diseases but it can be the initial stages for these diseases.

A person who is supposed to be affected by low blood pressure must have the blood pressure recorded as lower than 90/60. The pressure which indicates normal blood pressure is anything between 90/60 to 120/80m, only one of these numbers can be less than what is prescribed otherwise the person does not possess the normal blood pressure. Low blood pressure is one disease which is not considered to have been cure.

Inspite of the reading many doctors many doctors do not say that the person has low blood pressure unless the person does not shows some signs of other diseases. Some of these other signs are like fainting without any specific reason like improper consumption of food causes the people to faint, if people faint without any reason, dizziness, lightheadedness. All or some of these signs when they are present along with the reading, then the doctors usually declare the person to have low blood pressure. This is because of the fat that blood pressure that is low should be capable of causing health problems is usually caused by the other health problems. So it is considered to be essential by the doctors to treat the causes of low blood pressure and incase there are no causes of low blood pressure then the doctors just prescribe certain medicines so as to regulate the blood pressure.

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition that sneaks up on people slowly, so slowly that many people have it, and don’t even know it. In fact, one in every three Americans develops the condition. Most people think only older people suffer with hypertension, but the disease strikes many younger people every day.

High blood pressure is no longer something that you get when you are fifty and working a high-profile job. Teenagers get it, and even younger children. Today, the prevalence of high fat, high sugar diets do not help, and the rising rate of obesity is one of the major reasons more people suffer with the condition today. While the disease may last a lifetime, it is possible to treat and control it, sometimes with a mere change in diet and exercise, though for others, treatment comes in the form of medication.

Everyone has a blood pressure, as it is vital to life. The heart pumps blood through its chambers, and from there throughout the body’s arterial system. That oxygen rich blood is distributed throughout body organs, tissues and cells and then, once deoxygenated, returns through the veins back to the heart for a fresh dose of oxygen. The heart of a normal person beats around 80 to 120 times each minute. Those who are in excellent physical health and teenagers may have lower pressures. Anything within about 110 to 120 is great. You normally measure blood pressure in two parts. The first number in a blood pressure reading is the pressure exerted by the heart when it performs the pumping action. The second number is measures the heart at rest, between beats. So, a normal blood pressure reading could be 120/80, for example.

Medical experts consider someone who is at risk of high blood pressure “prehypertensive”, if the blood pressure reading is within 120-139 beats each minute, systolic pressure, which again, comes from the first measurement. Similarly, the bottom pressure, the diastolic measurement, may be anywhere between 80 to 90.

There are two different stages of high blood pressure. Stage One occurs when the blood pressure reading of any given individual is between 140-158 for a systolic reading. The bottom pressure measurement, the diastolic reading, can range from around 90-98. These numbers are not definite. You need to consider other things when getting a blood pressure reading. Is the person overweight, on medications or just finished exercising? While these figures may sound alarming, proper diet and exercise, combined with medications, may be enough to get blood pressure back under control.

Stage Two high blood pressure occurs when the systolic pressure ranges over 160, while the bottom pressure reads over 100. It is a good idea to get blood pressure checked at least once a
year, and if it is borderline, talk to your doctor about treatment choices. Don’t mess around with your heart. It is the only one you will have in your lifetime, unless you need a transplant. You and your doctor can treat high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a silent disease that can strike anyone without warning signs. Today, younger people are experiencing high blood pressure, because of bad eating habits, weight gain and use of drugs or alcohol. Lack of exercise can also lead to high blood pressure, so it’s important to keep a healthy lifestyle for peak health. High blood pressure can lead to other conditions that are not treatable, so prevention is a key to keeping quality of life.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is just that. It means that high pressure, or tension, is present in the arteries that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to every cell in your body and then transports that deoxygenated blood back to the lungs for more.

High blood pressure can be caused by stress, so it’s wise to try to ‘de-stress’ on daily if possible, especially in today’s hectic, always-on-the-go society. High blood pressure can lead to heart and kidney disease, as well as causing hardening of the arteries.

This condition gradually blocks artery walls until only a fraction of blood volume can get through to where it’s needed. Vision problems and even stroke can also be direct results of high blood pressure.

Organ Damage

Such conditions are sometimes called ‘end organ damage’ because the damage that occurs to some organs is directly due to the effects of high blood pressure and not because there was something wrong with them in the first place.

It’s important to recognize the signs of high blood pressure and then do something about them instead of waiting, to prevent such collateral damage from occurring. Studies have shown that high blood pressure, or hypertension, affects one out of four individuals in the United States alone.

Those over fifty years old experience the greatest risks. Regular exercise and a proper, well-balanced diet are two of the best preventive measures that a person can take to avoid high blood pressure.

Every person can experience varying levels of blood pressure throughout the day, so it’s important to take a blood pressure reading at several different times if you suspect that you may have high blood pressure.

Remember also that chemical balances within the body and any other medical conditions or diseases may affect a blood pressure reading. If suffering from high blood pressure, you should avoid products containing caffeine altogether. You should also avoid smoking.

Treatment

Many treatments and medications are available to treat high blood pressure, the most common of them being beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors. A beta-blocker can reduce the risk of having a heart attack and serves to protect the cardiac muscle in people who suffer from cardiac disease. An ACE inhibitor also serves the same purpose and both medications are relatively inexpensive.

However, there are many different kinds and causes of high blood pressure and each is and can be treated with a different class of medication. Prevention is the key. Keeping good eating habits, getting plenty of exercise and staying away from smoking and alcohol are the best things that anyone can do to avoid high blood pressure.

My life is about health, actually natural health! That is what I do and have done for almost 7 years straight but I have been an advocate of natural health since I was young. And my company’s natural health doctor, our researchers, and myself have studied high blood pressure (also called hypertension) for almost seven years and we’ve discovered one good thing about it- you can naturally treat hypertension with no medication.

However, millions of people spend billions of dollars seeing doctors, paying for visits, getting check-ups and buying expensive medication, but never realize that God created the miraculous human body to run near perfect and cure itself naturally. And the travesty is not only the financial aspect of the ‘silent killer’, but by lowering your high blood pressure with synthetic medication you could be hurting your body by not curing the cause.

The ‘Silent Killer’

If you don’t know already, high blood pressure got its nickname, the silent killer, because it does exactly that… it will kill you with NO WARNING. In fact, over 50,000 people died last year because of this disease. I recently read one article which called it a ‘widow maker’. And I couldn’t agree more; we all know someone who has lost a loved one because of this deadly disease.

But in the process of slowly killing you, it could cause well over one hundred health problems including obesity, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney stones, diabetes and numerous other diseases. But I can guarantee your doctor did not tell you that the miracle pill will not treat any of these diseases. In fact, the path of HBP medication will lead you back to the hospital for another visit, another disease to treat and anther pay check cashed by the medical industry. A little fishy, right?

If you do the math (and thousands are already sold), you could save literally multiple thousands of dollars and add decades to your life by naturally treating high blood pressure.

The Good Thing about High Blood Pressure

By now you know there is nothing good about high blood pressure. Whatever career; whatever race; whatever weight; whatever stage- you can treat high blood pressure naturally.

One of the best things about health is it seems that I learn something new everyday. In fact, I spend part of my week researching the latest rave in natural health and it always amazes me to hear about the human body. In fact, my personal faith is seriously strengthened each week learning something new about our bodies. And you would be amazed at some of the e-mails I have received from customers who have dropped drastic points (even stages) in weeks from simple natural health tips that work. Funny their doctors forgot to mention these tips?

Here is word from our company’s personal health doctor, Dr. Scott Saunders.

“As a medical doctor with over ten years of research in the field of nutritional and alternative medicine, I’ve seen a great deal of misinformation. As I’ve read through the reports by Barton Publishing, I’ve been impressed by how well-researched and comprehensive these reports are. There is no hype or pushing a specific type of therapy, just well-researched alternative treatments and some anecdotes. People are different so there are a variety of ways to heal illnesses. These reports take this into account, giving you many options and providing the information you need to heal yourself and be independent of drugs and “experts.”

Naturally Treat Hypertension

Treating your high blood pressure naturally is different from the traditional method of popping a pill and PRESTO! Many of our customers will try all of the treatments and drop points in weeks or months. Yet, many of our customers might try one to two different treatments and will drop points. Whatever the case, we recommend the following treatments.

1.	Your body! Your body must be treated as one of your most important assets. I like the famous health cliché ‘You pay for it now; or you pay for it later’. I would rather take care of your body now so you can live a long happy and healthy live. Our report gives you numerous tips about getting your body in tip-top shape (whatever your age or health condition).

2.	Your diet! Quite possibly the most important factor. ‘You are what you eat’ does have some truth. Do you know what foods can literally drop points in days? Do you know what foods can literally add points in days? I get numerous e-mails from our customers who were packing points and never realized it.

3.	What you drink! How many different types of liquids do you put in your mouth a day? Some are great and some are horrible. What are you sipping on during the day?

4.	Minerals! Most people are depleted of essential minerals! And three specific ones are proven to help lower the risk of this deadly disease.

5.	Vitamins! There are numerous vitamins but you only need a few to supplement to your diet. Discover what vitamins are a must if you have stage one, two or three.

6.	Your lifestyle! How does sleep affect this disease? How can chocolate be your new best friend? Discover several, simple lifestyle changes which can make a huge difference with high blood pressure.

Begin Your Treatment Today

Knowing a few basics facts about blood pressure can help you deal with any serious effects of high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is measured by a combination of two factors; how much blood is pumped, along with a measure of the resistance in the arterioles. If you have determined that you have high blood pressure, you’ve taken the first step toward making lifestyle changes to lower your blood pressure. Because of increased public awareness about risk factors and unhealthy eating habits, deaths resulting from coronary heart disease have been reduced significantly over recent years.

There are five immediate goals to pursue when trying to lower blood pressure.

1. Lose weight. Try to start by losing at least 10 pounds.
2. Reduce salt consumption to less than one-tenth of an ounce per day.
3. Consume no more than two alcoholic drinks per day.
4. Try to exercise 30 minutes, 3 times a week. Walking is one of the best ways to achieve this goal.
5. Stick to a low fat diet approved by the American Heart Association.

Of course, one of the main causes of high blood pressure is being overweight. Just a 10 pound reduction can reduce blood pressure enough to be able to stop taking medication upon approval of your doctor. Don’t crash diet; just eat three healthy, low fat, higher carbohydrate meals plus healthy snacks. Employ good eating habits such as eating slowly, carefully measuring portions, and leaving a little food on you plate at the end of a meal. Try to eat smaller portions at dinner instead of using that time for binge eating.

Regular exercise helps to protect you from diabetes, arthritis, stroke, and osteoporosis, as well as high blood pressure. Those who do not exercise have up to a 50 percent increased risk of high blood pressure, so regular exercise is well worth the time investment. The most perfect workout is a brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes, three to five times a week.

Make mental notes about foods that you should avoid. Steer clear of saturated fats found in meat, egg yolks, whole mild, butter, whole cheeses, and shortenings. Stay with safe oils such as olive oil and canola oil.

Another nutritional factor is the addition of fiber to your diet. Include whole grains, oatmeal and plenty of fruits and vegetables for a great way to prevent high blood pressure. Apples and prunes will add pectin, which can help with lowering cholesterol.

Learn to enjoy the true taste of foods by seriously reducing salt in your diet. This is one of the most basic ways to lower blood pressure and you will learn to enjoy the natural flavors of vegetables and other foods.

All of these changes won’t happen overnight, but slowly start eating healthier, adding exercise and monitoring your blood pressure. Together with your doctor, you can lower blood pressure, live healthier, and reduce your risk of heart diseases.

One of the most important pieces of medical data about your body is your blood pressure. A key component in understanding blood pressure is the ability to read blood pressure charts. Blood pressure is analogous to the water pressure of water going through plumbing in your house or through your garden hose.

Blood pressure is measured by two different numbers – diastolic blood pressure is the pressure (measured in milligrams of mercury) between beats of your heart, and systolic blood pressure is the amount of pressure put on your arteries when your heart is contracted, forcing blood through the system.

Normal blood pressure ranges from 100 over 60 to about 120 over 80, systolic over diastolic. Dystolic blood pressure is a technical term for when your systolic blood pressure is over 100 “points” higher than your diastolic pressure. Typical causes of that include internal bleeding and similar issues, where your diastolic pressure is low.

Blood pressure below 100 over 60 constitutes low blood pressure. People with low blood pressure tend to show many of the classic signs of anemia – they have low energy, and get dizzy from sudden movements – the “head rush” syndrome is a case of low blood pressure. Low blood pressure is quite common among teenagers, especially boys. As they go through a growth spurt, their body needs to adjusts to their body’s increase need for blood pressure to circulate blood to their extremities.

The “perfect” blood pressure appears to be in the range of 115 over 75, and “normal” blood pressure is 120 over 80. High blood pressure is the diagnosis when systolic blood pressure is 140 or higher for sustained periods of time, or diastolic pressure is elevated above 90 for extended periods of time.

High blood pressure is a medical condition that, while not directly damaging to the body in and of itself, is a leading indicator of other problems. It is a common precursor for problems like kidney disease, and eventually leads to arterial breakdowns throughout the body (especially in the heart) and ultimately can cause stroke – where a blood vessel breaks in the brain denying it blood and oxygen.

To treat high blood pressure, you need accurate data about what is and is not normal for your body. Like any periodic medical measurement, it needs to be done as a time series. Get accurate information on your blood pressure charts, read them carefully, and buy a digital blood pressure cuff so you can take your own measurements and know what’s normal for you! Then, armed with good data, start taking proactive measures to manage your blood pressure.

If your blood pressure is low, take some licorice just before doing athletic activities to boost it. If it’s normal, make sure you get a good 6 to 8 hours of rest each night, and try to exercise for 30 minutes every other day to the point of getting an elevated heart rate. If it’s high, take up activities that reduce stress and talk to your doctor about dietary and lifestyle changes. Understanding blood pressure charts and taking the precautions to maintain a healthy blood pressure reading can help you live a longer, healthier life.

Blood pressure is a measure of the force that the blood applies to the walls of the arteries as it flows through them. It’s normal for blood pressure to increase when you exert yourself, or when you feel stressed or anxious. But if your blood pressure is consistently higher than normal at rest, this is high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

High blood pressure (hbp) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Each time your heart beats, it pumps out blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When your heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure.

The most commonly used diuretic to treat high blood pressure in the UK is called bendroflumethiazide (bendrofluazide) – but there are others. For example, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, cyclopenthiazide, hydrochlorothiazide, and indapamide. Diuretics work by increasing the amount of salt and fluid that you pass out in your urine. This has some effect on reducing the fluid in the circulation which reduces blood pressure.

They may also have a ‘relaxing’ effect on the blood vessels which reduces the pressure within the blood vessels. Only a low dose of a diuretic is needed to treat high blood pressure. Therefore, you will not notice much diuretic effect (you will not pass much extra urine).

The preferred treatment of choice for those suffering high blood pressure is usually a change of lifestyle. For those who are overweight, smoke, lead highly stressful lives or seldom exercise, sometimes this is the only wake up call they need. Once they make the necessary lifestyle adjustments, they will often find their blood pressure symptom restored to a more normal range.

Slightly raised blood pressure may not need to be treated so aggressively, but regular monitoring is important. If you have very severe high blood pressure, you may need to go to hospital for treatment. But it’s much more likely that you will be cared for by your GP and/or a nurse.

A recent study showed that they can be accurate, but sometimes are not. It usually is not possible to tell whether a particular machine is working properly. The cuff should inflate and fit snugly around your arm.

Diabetes considerably increases the risk of cardiovascular disease if hypertension is also present, so the targets for blood pressure control in diabetes are tighter.

High blood pressure can occur in children or adults, but it’s more common among people over age 35. It’s particularly prevalent in African Americans, middle-aged and elderly people, obese people, heavy drinkers and women taking birth control pills.

It may run in families, but many people with a strong family history of high blood pressure never have it. People with diabetes mellitus, gout or kidney disease are more likely to have high blood pressure, too.
